Do Whitening Mouthwashes work?

Whitening Mouthwashes are mouthwashes that contain a whitening agent, usually Hydrogen Peroxide. This agent helps to whiten teeth and remove stains.

We are sure that these mouthwashes have some sort of whitening effect but we have found the effect to be limited. They definitely do not replace dental whitening procedures. The reason for is that these mouthwashes normally contain a very small percentage, up to 0.1% of hydrogen peroxide. In the UK over-the -counter whitening products are by law only allowed to contain hydrogen peroxide up to this concentration.  Whitening gels that are available at the dentist contain up to 6% Hydrogen Peroxide. This is a significant difference in percentage and hence the dental whitening gels will have a much greater whitening effect.
